My name is Joy and I live in the Philippines with my daughter, Coco. In 2011 I was overweight, overworked, underpaid, stressed out and broke. The short story is I had resigned from my job and accepted one overseas while simultaneously in the adoption process. However, before I could move overseas my agency told me they wouldn’t work with me any longer unless I remained in America so I gave up my dream job and stayed to complete the adoption. It took me seven long months to find another job which was lower paying but necessary in order to bring Coco home. I don’t have to tell you what an international adoption plus unemployment for seven months does to your savings account… or your 800 credit score. In the end, though, it was all worth it as I got matched with my beautiful daughter. Parenting that first year was difficult and I found it necessary to make a change to recoup and regroup so I sold most of our things, rented out my house and accepted a job in Manila. One year later I am still kind of fat and stressed out but I’ve paid off $40,000 worth of debt and have gotten to visit Singapore and Thailand to boot!
This blog is year two of living overseas. There are some great things about this lifestyle. Sure, I miss friends and family a ton but I love that I’m on my way to living the life I really want to lead: fit, debt-free, relaxed, bilingual and happy!
I blog about finances, health, food, travel, single-parenting, adoption, my goals and tidbits about my sweet daughter, home from Ethiopia for 2 ½ years. Feel free to follow along to see if I can accomplish my best life. Maybe I can even inspire you to do the same!
